HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Marshall Rogers: Brightest Days and Darkest Knights, TwoMorrows. The long-awaited illustrated bio hits comics shops!

New History of the DC Universe #2, DC. Whenever DC does a history-type comic, I always look forward most to the Silver and Bronze Ages section (of course). Those eras get the spotlight here — even with a Go-Go Checks logo sketch variant! The first issue by Mark Waid, Jerry Ordway and Todd Nauck was outstanding — and the footnotes by Waid, Dave Wielgosz and John Wells may have actually been the highlight! Mike Allred and Brad Walker are the main artists this issue.

Scott adds: More of Waid’s re-presentation of all DC history!

Nightwing by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo Omnibus Vol. 1, DC. I’m not an omnibuyer but I’d remiss if I didn’t point out this collection from the definitive Nightwing run.

Back Issue #160, TwoMorrows. The Summer Fun Issue! Great article on DC’s often-wacky Slurpee cups in there.

Batman #161, DC. The last of the George Perez 1980s postcard-set variant covers is here!

The X-Men #137 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. A big one. Like, a really big one.

The Amazing Spider-Man: The Black Costume — Year One Marvel Archive Edition, Marvel. I love my Facsimile Editions and I love my treasuries. This collects last year’s ’80s black-suit Spidey reprint issues — ads and all — in a $100 treasury-size hardcover (or at least close to a classic treasury size). I can’t quite put my finger on why, but this isn’t a concept that gets me whipped up. So just consider this a PSA.

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

Fantastic Four Presents: Franklin Richards — Son Of A Genius #1, Marvel. I love Chris Eliopoulos’ adventures of Li’l Franklin.

West Coast Avengers Vol. 1: The Gospel of Ultron, Marvel. It’s not the WCA of my youth, but I am enjoying it.

Marvel Masterworks: The Incredible Hulk Vol. 19, Marvel. Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema introduce the Intelligent Hulk!

  1. RE: Franklin Richards

He looks much like Calvin, of Calvin and Hobbes fame, wearing a sort-of FF costume.

  2. Re: George Perez postcard covers. I remember picking up those postcards in the early 1980s at the Atlanta Fantasy Fair, which was a large, convention in the southeast at the time. Now, if I can only find them!!!‍♂️‍♂️

  3. TwoMorrows’ new BACK ISSUES magazine also features a meaty article I wrote about the early days at San Diego Comic-Con. Why? Because I was one of the show’s co-creators. You’ll dig it, I promise.

Wish I could. But the “cheesecake” take on that cover has kept me from ordering this issue of BackIssue. Shame there wasn’t an alternate cover option. And it isn’t just this publication either….I’m really missing out on the upcoming Dave Stevens’ Comic Book Creator issue. My wife looks the other way as it is with my comic related hobby but I think the look I’d get if this issue of BackIssue was lying around would end that really quick. I only mention this here so maybe the chance you can voice this to your editor for future issues.
