HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

DC Finest: Wonder Woman — The Legend of Wonder Woman, DC. Not only does this reprint a heap of pre-Crisis WW for the first time, it also includes the wonderfully charming miniseries from Kurt Busiek and Trina Robbins.

Gotham City Sirens: Unfit For Orbit #1, DC Comics. This looks goofy and fun.

Captain America Epic Collection: The Swine, Marvel. Jack Kirby’s wacky and awesome 1970s Cap run concludes! Arnim Zola makes his debut!

Godzilla vs. Thor #1, Marvel. Of all the recent Godzilla/Marvel mashups, I have to admit this one is the most intriguing to me for some reason.

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Fantastic Four: First Steps #1, Marvel. A groovy in-universe MCU comic — by Matt Fraction and Mark Buckingham, with a Phil Noto cover — that preps you for the much-anticipated July 25 movie.

Fantastic Four #50 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. Also just a couple weeks ahead of said movie…

JSA #9, DC. I read JSA #8 because it was basically a standalone story that took place during World War II, and I dug it. I’d love some opinions on the series as a whole. Thanks!

Astro City #1 Facsimile Edition, Image. A reprint of the very first issue from 30 years ago. There’s also a foil cover.

Captain America #1, Marvel. Featuring this Luciano Vecchio variant that riffs on 1976’s Bicentennial Calendar — and one that presents John Romita’s original image:

  1. Jeff Lemire’s JSA has been a good read, though I have a feeling it will read better when it’s collected. I do wish the series had a consistent artist, even if the art has been good. Issue 8 has probably been my favorite of the bunch because we got a World.War II adventure with guest appearances by Sgt. Rock and the Unknown Soldier (I really want some DC Finest: Unknown Soldier volumes).

All that said, I still really miss the pre-Crisis Earth-2 and its JSA and Infinity, Inc. Forty years after the Crisis, and I still miss that JSA.

    • The Bronze Age JSA is my JSA. I wish there had been more stories told. I’ve never felt a connection since Crisis. Just not the same characters….

    • Hoping that this talk about an upcoming “crisis” at DC puts the JSA and associated characters back on an Earth-2 separate from the current situation…

  2. JSA has been a slow build, which is why #8 stood out so much. Instead of micro arcs that create a sweeping story, with each issue I need to remind myself what happened last month. And yet, as always, I am full on JSA!!!

  4. You caught me by surprise! I thought the FF #50 facsimile was coming out on 7/23. And I had absolutely no idea there was going to be a facsimile of Astro City #1! Is this the first time Image has published a facsimile edition?
