MARVEL to Salute Beloved 1976 BICENTENNIAL CALENDAR With a Year of Homage Covers

Counting down to the nation’s 250th anniversary…

Marvel in July will begin a yearlong countdown to America’s 250th birthday with a year’s worth of variant covers that homage the fan-fave 1976 Mighty Marvel Bicentennial Calendar, which featured such greats as John Romita, John Buscema, Gil Kane and many others.

The first one, by Luciano Vecchio for Captain America #1, paying tribute to Romita’s calendar cover, will go on sale July 2:

Two other dates were also announced Wednesday:

August 6, for Marcus To’s Frank Robbins-inspired piece, which will adorn Uncanny X-Men #19

… and, September (exact day TBA), for Chris Campana’s riff on Herb Trimpe for The Incredible Hulk #29:

Marvel also unveiled a fourth cover — presumably for October — with Greg Land saluting Frank Brunner. (Brunner’s illo ran in October of that year, btw.):

There are many more to come, obviously.

This comes after the news earlier this year that Marvel and Abrams ComicArts will be reprinting the calendar itself.

  1. This makes my Boomer heart happy, great idea— I was 22 in 1976. And it’s hard to top Frank Brunner but Greg Land’s contempo cover of uncanny creatures is terrific!
