HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

The X-Men #4 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. Scarlet Witch debuts! Wearing green on the cover! Even if this weren’t a classic, I’ll buy pretty much any Facsimile Edition to keep the line going.

The Green Lantern #9, DC. Love, love, love Liam Sharp’s cover homaging the Silver Age. Click here for more on this beaut.

Hawkman #29, DC. You know as well as I do that Hawkman was destined to be cancelled as soon as the first issue hit. That’s the burden of being a Hawkman fan. But Robert Venditti did a wonderful job with the Winged Wonder, once and for all sorting out Carter Hall’s unfortunately convoluted history with a run of entertaining and moving adventure tales. This is the finale.

Amazing Spider-Man #52, Marvel. Another pick on the strength of the cover alone: 13th Dimension fave Jeffrey Verrege’s variant covers honoring indigenous peoples have been glorious – and this is my fave.

True Believers, Marvel. Three more King In Black-related classic dollar reprints!

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

Pogo, Vol. 7: Pockets Full of Pie, Fantagraphics. What’s the greatest newspaper comic strip ever published? I can think of three or four candidates, but Walt Kelly’s Pogo would have to be in the conversation. Fantagraphics’ much-lauded comprehensive collection continues.

Walt Disney’s Donald Duck Vol. 15: Under the Polar Ice, Fantagraphics. What’s the greatest comic-book series ever published? I can think of three or four candidates, but Carl Barks’s Donald Duck would have to be in the conversation. Fantagraphics’ much-lauded comprehensive collection continues.

Star Trek: Deep Space 9 — Too Long a Sacrifice #4, IDW. Our space-noir murder mystery reaches its climax as Odo and his unlikely partner track down a killer! From David Tipton, Greg Scott, and yours truly.

Avengers Epic Collection: Heavy Metal, Marvel. What would happen if someone truly unqualified rose to the rank of chairman of the Avengers? How bad would things get? Look no further than Heavy Metal to witness the disastrous Avengers tenure of Doctor Druid. It does not go well…

  1. That GL cover reminds me of the Noosa yoghurt ad that keep popping up online, with the man on his knee proposing to the woman eating the yoghurt–instead of a ring, he’s offering her a blueberry, and she replies “Oh honey”. It’s only about 15-20 seconds long.

If you haven’t had it pop up on any of the sites you look at, Google it and you’ll see the comparison right away–makes me think GL goes around spoiling Carol’s yoghurt pleasure!

  2. I just noticed the Green Lantern and Hawkman logos are essentially the same. C’mon DC. You have 80 years of great logo designs just gathering dust. These aren’t bad, but let’s have more variety.

Oh Ira Schnapp…where are you now?
