Fantastic Four Epic Collection: At War With Atlantis, Marvel. Another beautiful color collection of the greatest collaboration in comics history, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

She-Hulk by Dan Slott Omnibus, Marvel. Although John Byrne’s She-Hulk run remains my favorite, the two ongoing series written by Dan Slott run a very close second, and here we find them both handily collected into a really big hardcover.

Marvel Masterworks: The Defenders Vol. 7, Marvel. I really miss the Defenders. I loved the notion of the “non-team,” where all the super-types who didn’t fit in around the other superheroes would hang out together to find companionship and empathy. And even then they didn’t really like each other all that much.

I think that Bond cover proves Caroline Munro was also the greatest Vampirella who never was…and she apparently wasn’t up for the role even though Hammer Films was intending on making one, and she had appeared in several Hammer films!!!

Actually, Chris, she was offered the role but turned it down due to the nudity required for the part—and this was after the version with Barbara Leigh and Peter Cushing fell through. (Is it okay to promote? I tell the whole Hammer Vampi story in a book I wrote about the Warren Publishing years, From the Stars…a Vampiress: An Unauthorized Guide to Vampirella’s Classic Horror Adventures—on sale now!)

Thanks for the correction, Steven. I know Barbara Leigh was cast as Vampi, and photos of her were used on Vampirella covers around the time, but I always wondered why Catherine Munro wasn’t their go-to for the role!

Hammer actually went through their lineup of actresses and they all turned it down because of the nudity in the script (not a lot, but enough). Leigh had done a photo shoot for Playboy and some nudity for b-movies, so she had no problem with the requirement. And those photo covers were from a promotional shoot Leigh had done in ’75—except she had to threaten Warren with a lawsuit for payment because he didn’t have her permission to use the pics!
