Dragonfly & Dragonflyman #3, AHOY Comics. The smartest, most insightful superhero comic being published today. On the face of it, it’s a satire comparing comics from the Silver Age to those of today (or even more precisely Adam West’s Caped Crusader and Frank Miller’s Dark Knight). But on a deeper level, it’s a rumination on heroism, loyalty, obsession and the dangers of blindly protecting the status quo. Tom Peyer and Peter Krause are improving on the original The Wrong Earth formula. And, hey, it’s the Million Dollar Debut of Lady Dragonflyman! Bowie: Stardust, Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams, Insight Studios. The eagerly awaited graphic novel bio of David Bowie by Mike Allred, Steve Horton and Laura Allred. An Eisner contender for sure.

Batman #86, DC. Think about this for a second: There have been only two regular writers on the Batman flagship title since Sept. 2011. That’s a lonnnnng time. So, yeah, I’m curious to see what James Tynion IV and co. will bring to the table in the main book. Especially with all the buzz of major, major changes to come in the DCU.

Back Issue #118, TwoMorrows. It’s the “Greatest Stories Never Told” issue and there’s a lot of terrific stuff in this one – including Alex Ross talking about his failed Fantastic Four pitch (click here) and Steve Englehart detailing his uncredited work on Batman ’89 (click here), as well as a look at Englehart and Trevor Von Eeden’s unpublished Batman vs. Mad Hatter story. Outstanding ish.

Marvels X #1, Marvel. Alex Ross and Jim Krueger return to the world of Earth X with a prequel miniseries. Well-Bee is the artist this time around.

True Believers, Marvel. Two dollar reprints this week: Moon Knight #1 by Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz, and The Avengers #6, featuring the debut of Baron Zemo and the Masters of Evil, by Lee and Kirby. Both for a total of two bucks. Two bucks. That’s robbery.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #101, IDW Publishing. Sophie Campbell takes over as writer/artist with this issue, heading off in a brand-new direction, but one that still honors all that has come before. It’s a great start, don’t miss it!

Swamp Thing: The Bronze Age Vol. 2, DC Comics. More never-before-reprinted Swamp Thing tales from the ’70s, from creators like Gerry Conway, Bob Haney, Jim Aparo and Keith Giffen!

Dollar Comics: The Brave and the Bold #197, DC Comics. Brought back to print to coincide with the upcoming Batman/Catwoman #1, this tale of the romance between Earth-Two Batman and Catwoman is my all-time favorite Batman comic, as told by Alan Brennert and Joe Staton.
