HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Batman vs. Ra’s al Ghul #3, DC. Sure, what Neal Adams is doing is bonkers. But it’s fun. Remember fun? I love fun. (Click here for an EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW.)

Adventures of Spider-Man: Radioactive TPB, Marvel. This trade features never-before-reprinted tales from the ’90s Spider-Man Magazine, featuring work by the likes of Marie Severin, John Romita Sr. and Joey Cavalieri. It’s for the younger set – and that’s great. I look forward to reading it too!

Detective Comics #1016, DC. I don’t say this lightly but is it possible that Mrs. Freeze is a better villain than Mr. Freeze? Either way, Peter Tomasi and Doug Mahnke are giving us (frozen) solid Batman right now.

Star Trek: Picard — Countdown #1, IDW. Boy, IDW does Star Trek right, no matter what series you’re talking about. So, with interest in the new CBS All Access series Picard at a fever pitch, you gotta pick up this prequel from Mike Johnson, TV Trek’s Kirsten Beyer, Angel Hernandez and crew.

Shazam! #8, DC. OK, I admit I dropped this book because of a sheer lack of time to read everything I want to read. It was fine but something had to give. So why am I picking it? Good lord look at that Michael Cho variant. That’s a glorious piece of art you can buy for $3.99.

Fantastic Four: Grand Design #2, Marvel. Tom Scioli’s homage to Stan and Jack’s seminal FF is jam-jam-jam-packed. In the finale of this two-part mini, we arrive at the Coming of Galactus — and more. (Click here for a SNEAK PEEK.)

Archie and Me Jumbo Comics Digest #23, Archie. Early stocking stuffer alert! Buy this for the kids, the grandkids – or yourself! Archie’s always been great at playing up the seasons all through the year and I love that.

Batman: Black and White Mini PVC Set, DC Collectibles. Another admission: I’ve never really been all that into the whole Batman: Black and White thing. Weird, I know. Anyway, DC Collectibles has been putting out boxed sets of 3.75-inch PVC figures that are essentially more affordable versions of their larger, higher-end statues. This set features Carmine Infantino’s Batman and Robin from that classic rooftop pin-up, so that’s a big selling point right there. It’s $40 for the shebang, but you also get Breyfogle, Bolland and more.

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

Booster Gold: The Big Fall, DC Comics. Finally, a nice hardcover collection of the original Dan Jurgens stories that introduced Booster Gold to the DC Universe.

MODOK: Head Trips, Marvel. Do I really need a “Best of MODOK” trade paperback collection? Yes. Yes I do.

Timely’s Greatest: The Golden Age Human Torch by Carl Burgos Omnibus, Marvel. This is intriguing. I think I’ve only read three Carl Burgos Golden Age Torch stories in my entire life.

  1. Your recommendations are always far too many superhero related titles, you’re missing some great stuff out there– Vampire State Building and Hazel and Cha Cha Save Christmas come to mind. Branch out– there’s nothing worse than 45 year old cape loving comic fans 😉
