FRANCO’s Groovy Cut-Paper SPIDER-MAN Art Is the Bee’s Knees

FRANCO’s FREE-FOR-ALL FRIDAYS!

Convention season rolls on.

Having just finished a grueling but fun week in San Diego, I like to chill and relax, but I have deadlines coming up AND I also have one of my favorite conventions this weekend — Terrificon at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. These two conventions are so different, as well as being on opposite ends of the country.

Terrificon, run by my pal, Mitch Hallock, is a real good down-home comic book show. Don’t let the glitzy location fool you. Yes, it’s in a casino but it’s a good real comic book-centered show. Lots of classic creators and panels but also a slew of up-and-coming talent. And it’s become my favorite comic show because of this.

Doing conventions back to back like this is difficult. So what do I do to relax and get ready after SD and before Terrificon? Well, I paint and draw. And I know what you’re thinking — that’s work. It is. But I enjoy it and it does relax me. I find new material and art supplies sometimes make me experiment in ways I have not before. Case in point with some new paint holders that offer less mess. Couple that with some fine-tip acrylic paint markers and my studio is a lot cleaner than usual. These are some of the results:

Also, as a bonus, I finished up this cut-paper Spider-Man piece. This was time consuming. Full disclosure, I started this sometime last year and worked on it bit by bit here and there, but after the full days I did in SD, I was really looking to some meditative time, and this was like putting together my own jigsaw puzzle. It was a fun exercise and I love the way it turned out.

I’m happy with all the results here and they did their job on me because I’m geared, relaxed and ready for an amazing time at Terrificon.

Hope to see you there — and Happy Friday!

  1. I used to love doing cut paper artwork in college. Sadly, I haven’t done it in years. It might be getting time to shake the rust off and pull out my exacto knife again.
