Buncha thoughts:
— Everybody goes on an on about the cover — and rightfully so — but don’t sleep on the story. It’s a prime example of the type of early Bronze Age gothic mystery that revived Batman’s primordial Golden Age stylings, by Denny O’Neil. Groovy art by Irv Novick and Dick Giordano, too. Plus, there’s a Robin solo story about nefarious doings at Hudson University.
— Good Halloween reading. It was first released Oct. 20, 1970.
— Since DC already released 1939’s Detective Comics #31 as a Facsimile, you can now display it alongside Batman #227. Neat!
— Always worth noting when I think a cover will look especially great in foil.
— Obligatory Price Comparison: This is one of those issues that just keeps soaring in price. An unslabbed, mid-to-high-grade original copy recently sold on eBay for a startling $1,650.

I recently discovered that I had actually owned this comic for decades. It was buried in long boxes that hadn’t been touched in forever. I had completely forgotten I owned a copy. I’ve no memory of buying it. And it had long been on my list of “must haves” though I knew it would be super expensive. (Same goes for #251.) Now that the facsimile has been announced time to sell! Exciting news!

I feel like the cover has overshadowed the story over the last couple of decades. I first read the story as a kid in The Batman’s Strangest Cases treasury and didn’t get to see the cover until a Batman 50th anniversary book in 1989. The story features some of Irv Novick and Dick Giordano’s best artwork, so I’m glad fans will finally get to see the story.
That said, this is one of my favorite Batman covers. Generally, when I started get Batman issues off eBay in the early 2000s, I didn’t go for issues I had reprinted since I wanted to read stories that I hadn’t read. I did pick up a couple of Batman 227s (one to frame, one for the collection) for probably about $10 a pop, just because I loved the cover so much. Hard to believe the insane amount of money it goes for now. 227 is one of four Batman covers I have a poster of framed in my office now.

Yeah, that’s where I first read this story as well. What’s really ironic is that when that story was reprinted in LCE C-59, they only reprinted the story and NOT the cover. In fact, none of the covers for any of the stories were reproduced.
