Exclusive ALEX ROSS SUPERMAN #1 Facsimile Edition Variant Coming Soon

A San Diego Comic-Con exclusive also available online…

Another 1939 Superman #1 Facsimile Edition is coming — it is the Summer of Superman, after all — and this time it’s an Alex Ross variant sold by the artist.

Dig this:

The ish is nominally a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive but there is also a waiting list to buy one online from Ross’ website.

Dig the official info:

Superman #1 Tribute Comic

This is a San Diego Comic-Con 2025 Exclusive Premiere. There will be a highly limited online pre-order opening Friday, July 11 — be sure to join the waitlist!

For SDCC 2025, Alex Ross Art & DC Comics have teamed up to offer a stunning Superman #1 Tribute! This comic features Alex Ross’s painted tribute to Superman #1 (1939), a classic cover by Joe Shuster.

The new Alex Ross cover is presented here as part of a facsimile edition including the original story, artwork, and advertisements from Superman #1.

Several thoughts:

The original

— There are four versions available: an “A Cover” with the vintage trade dress and whatnot for $40, and a virgin “B Cover” for $50. Then there are slabbed, 9.8-rated CGC versions of both. Each one runs $250.

— This will be standard modern comic size, not Golden Age size.

— The painting itself is not new, but the vintage packaging adds a whole new dimension (no pun intended). That’s the one I’m going for. (Leo O’Mealia was also an illustrator of the cover.)

— This is not the same as the DC-released Superman #1 Facsimile Edition due July 30. That one’s Golden Age-size and will have foil and logo sketch variants. (DC also released a standard, modern-size version in 2022.)

  1. This looks really nice. There is no denying his talent. But I’m over the paying a premium just for a cover. $40 used to get a comic with artwork and a signature. Not that I need his autograph on anything else. $250 for a graded?! That’s quite the mark up. I just wish he’d do more full on comic work. Be a story teller again. But it does look nice…

    • I totally get that. And personally, I’m not into autographs or slabs. But occasionally, I’m up for paying a premium for a cover like this because, in my view, it’s like buying a small piece of art.
