Early Bronze Age INCREDIBLE HULK Gets EPIC COLLECTION Treatment

By Roy Thomas, Herb Trimpe, Archie Goodwin — and other Marvel heavyweights…

Marvel’s Epic Collection line is practically the perfect modern presentation of classic comics. Similar to the long-running Marvel Masterworks series, these trade paperbacks present issues in chronological order but at a more affordable price.

Well, one upcoming edition likely to catch some eyeballs is The Incredible Hulk Epic Collection: Who Will Judge the Hulk? — due at the end of the year, according to an Amazon listing.

Dig the official description:

The Hulk is back and ready to smash his way through more villains than you can throw a tank at! Watch out, Sandman and Leader, you’re in the path of the Green Goliath and his journey into the subatomic world of the Psyklop. There he will meet his true love, Jarella, for the first time. Then comes the debut of long-time enemy and ally, Doc Samson. In the aftermath of a battle with another doctor (Doom, that is), the Hulk finds himself in the sights of the military’s Project Greenskin. Objective? Destroy the Hulk! Finally, with the help of Ant-Man, Hulk will reunite with Jarella, but not before he’s put on trial by the heroes of the Marvel Universe.

COLLECTING: VOL. 5: INCREDIBLE HULK (1968) 138-156, ANNUAL (1968) 3-4 (COVER ONLY); AVENGERS (1963) 88

A couple thoughts:

Trimpe pencils, John Severin inks

— The cover lists Roy Thomas, Archie Goodwin and artist Herb Trimpe as the primary creators of these early-’70s tales. But quite a number of big names also lent a hand here and there, including Steve Englehart, Gerry Conway, Gary Friedrich, Len Wein, Chris Claremont — even Harlan Ellison.

— The 448-page paperback lists for $39.99 and Amazon says it will be available Dec. 8, 2020 — but that usually means a couple weeks earlier in comics shops. That said, here’s our standard caveat: The book has not been solicited by Marvel yet — as far as I can tell — so nothing is official until it’s official. At the same time, the comics industry is in crisis right now because of the coronavirus pandemic, so this is subject to substantial change. Just keep coming back to 13th Dimension for updates.
