Cover artist extraordinaire Dave Johnson brings it…
We’ve been having some fun with DC’s Batman 85th anniversary variant covers this summer. Y’know, the ones that homage classic covers but recast the Dark Knight as his screen counterparts.
Our most recent one, for example, is September’s Batman #152, a Nicola Scott satire of Adam West’s Caped Crusader and Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns.
Well, another one has popped up — and it’ll grab the eyes of every Bronze Age, Neal Adams and Batman ’89 fan.
Dig. This.
That’s Dave Johnson riffing on Neal Adams’ classic Batman #251 from 1973, and Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson from Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman flick.
What a durn great idea. I especially like the grotesque, gloomy coloring of the sky, which is very much in keeping with the movie.
That low-res version is the only one out there right now but I wasn’t gonna wait to share, because come on! Best part is the actual cover will look that much more smashing.
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #31 is due Sept. 18. The variant lists for $4.99.

I’m a little surprised the buildings don’t more closely resemble the Anton Furst designs but overall an excellent job.
