DC Recasts Famous BATMAN Covers With Screen Versions of the Caped Crusader

COMING IN AUGUST: Jorge Jimenez, Lee Bermejo and others bring you dual homages…

DC released its solicitations Friday and listed are five covers marked “Batman 85th Anniversary” variants. The gimmick? The covers homage classic Batman covers of the past — but instead use screen versions of the Dark Knight.

For example, dig Jorge Jimenez’s intense take on Norm Breyfogle’s classic Detective Comics #587 — only with Michael Keaton in the lightning-lit alleyway:

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #30, due Aug. 21

There’s also David Mazzuchelli’s Batman: Year One reimagined by Lee Bermejo, starring Robert Pattinson (fitting since Battinson’s outfit so clearly echoes Bermejo’s own version)…

Batman: The Brave and the Bold #16, due Aug. 28

… as well as Gabriele Dell’Otto’s version of Jim Lee’s Hush Batman, with Ben Affleck chilling with a gargoyle…

Batman #151, due Aug. 7

… and Simone DiMeo’s salute to Batman: The Animated Series a la Neal Adams and Bernie Wrightson’s Batman #241:

Batman and Robin #12, due Aug. 14

And get this: There’s one more to come — by Chris Samnee for Detective Comics #1088 (Aug. 28).

Who do you figure will get the treatment? Adam West? Christian Bale? Robert Lowery? Can’t wait to find out!

Meanwhile, there are two other Bat-covers coming in August that also pay tribute to the past.

Mike Allred’s Batman: Dark Age #5 (Aug. 28), which riffs on Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns…

… and Dan Mora’s variant for Death in the Family: Robin Lives! #2 (Aug. 14):

What’s especially clever about this one is that it’s a takeoff on Breyfogle’s Batman #465, one of the most famous Batman and Robin images featuring Tim Drake…

… but if Jason Todd never died, it only makes sense that he’d be on the cover.

Sharp.

  1. With Batman fever currently on the brain for DC, it kinda makes sense that they release variant covers such as these done by multiple artists.
