Next up? 1941’s Detective Comics #58 — featuring the Penguin’s debut.

DETECTIVE COMICS #58 FACSIMILE EDITION

Written by BILL FINGER
Art by BOB KANE, JERRY ROBINSON, and GEORGE ROUSSOS
Cover by FRED RAY and JERRY ROBINSON

$6.99 US | 64 pages
ON SALE 8/22/23

Batman and Robin take on the waddling criminal mastermind known as the Penguin in his historic first appearance in the pages of Detective Comics. Will the Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder be bested by this dapper villain and his arsenal of trick umbrellas? And the action doesn’t end with the Dark Knight. This facsimile reproduction also includes the backup features Spy, the Crimson Avenger, Slam Bradley, and more, plus all the classic ads from the original 1941 edition, making this a must-have for fans of Golden Age detective stories!

A few thoughts:

— I love that DC is releasing this one and I have to say it caught me by surprise. Makes sense though, with Colin Farrell’s Penguin TV series on the way. It’s scheduled for 2024, but filming has been suspended because of the writers’ strike.

— I do wish DC (and Marvel) would release the Golden Age Facsimile Editions in the proper, larger size. But, hey, I won’t die on that mountaintop. This is still groovy as all get out.

* The Omega Men #3 Facsimile Edition has already been announced for August. Click here.

Obligatory Price Comparison: Like Batman #1, finding an unslabbed copy of an original is exceptionally unlikely. But a 7.5 slabbed copy sold through Heritage Auctions in September 2021 for $44,400, including buyer’s premium. The Facsimile Edition is seven bucks. (It has 64 pages.)

  1. I don’t mind them being printed in a more modern size. This way they fit in the old spinner rack.
