DC’s GIANT-SIZE SPECIAL EDITIONS: The New 11″ x 17″ Comics Are Here to Stay

The inaugural Batman #158 Giant-Size Special Edition is going to a second printing…

DC’s new, massive 11″ x 17″ comic-book format looks like it’s a smash success.

As we’ve reported, the “Giant-Size Special Edition” introduced in March with Batman #158’s first chapter of Hush 2, has already expanded to include every issue of the storyline. Not just that, DC in April unveiled the new 11″ x 17″ DC W.I.P. line — essentially Artist’s Editions of specific issues (beginning with July’s DC W.I.P. All-Star Superman #1, by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.)

Now comes the news that the Batman #158 Giant-Size Special Edition is going to a second printing with a recolored cover:

Batman #158 Giant-Size Special Edition Second Printing features a recolored version of the original Batman #158 main cover, and will be available in both a standard main cover and an open-to-order foil variant,” DC said in a message to retailers. “Both are on Final Order Cutoff this coming Monday, May 5, and on sale Wednesday, May 28—the same day as Batman #160, “Batman: H2SH” Chapter Three.

The main covers run $14.99, the foils run $19.99.

Looks like we can get used to stocking up on 11″ x 17″ bags and boards, because this is officially a Thing.

Meanwhile, I’m just gonna leave this right here: Imagine if DC extended this format to Facsimile Editions. I mean, just think about Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams’ Batman #251 in this size.

  2. Sad to think that the great Treasurycast podcast is no longer with us even though Treasury editions are officially back!

  3. I’m curious if we’ll see collected editions using the same format going forward.

  4. I will say: man, these things are vulnerable to damage. My copy of #159 slid around too much in the car and got a lovely crease on the spine. I think I’ll do these through Hush, but not past that unless it’s a really, really good facsimile edition.

I will note that I’m getting older and these books are convenient for my worsening eyesight…
