DC to Salute JOE KUBERT’s CENTENNIAL With a Facsimile Edition and a Special Retrospective Issue

EXCLUSIVE! A fitting tribute to one of the all-time greats…

DC in September will release a startling seven Facsimile Editions. A lot of them deserve their own spotlight, so make sure you check out the links at the bottom of this post. You will be so glad you did.

One of those issues is 1969’s DC Special #5, which was devoted to the work of the great Joe Kubert. Not just that, DC is pairing the Facsimile with a special retrospective comic, in celebration of the late artist’s centennial — Joe Kubert: 100 Years — A Life in Covers #1.

Buncha thoughts:

— Both issues will be released two days before Kubert’s centennial. He was born Sept. 18, 1926.

— DC did not release the final version of the cover for Joe Kubert: 100 Years — A Life in Covers #1, or the variants for DC Special #5. We’ll have our eyes open.

— This is a wonderful move by DC. Kubert was not only a great artist and writer, but his legacy was built around his role as an educator and founder of The Kubert School. (I attended Saturday classes in high school.)

Obligatory Price Comparison: An unslabbed, high-grade original DC Special #5 recently sold on eBay for $24.

  1. I’ve been saying for years that Kubert, Cardy, and Adams all deserve nice hardcover collections of all their covers. I think his would probably be quite a bit larger than the other two combined though!
they really missed an opportunity to do a 100 page super spectacular special of 100 of his covers for his hundredth birthday though.

  2. Very nice. I will get this for sure. No library of comic history is complete without a focus on Joe’s work!
