DC to Release ACTION COMICS #1 Facsimile Edition — in Full GOLDEN AGE SIZE

EXCLUSIVE DETAILS: It was bound to happen — and it will…

On Friday, we told you about the five Facsimile Editions DC has coming in April.

Now, we’ve got one more to get you excited about: Action Comics #1 — in full, Golden Age dimensions.

Yep, this one’s coming for April 18’s DC-sponsored Superman Day, but it will be in stores the Wednesday before, April 16. (April 18 marks the anniversary of Action #1’s 1938 debut.)

DC mentioned this was happening in a press release about the company’s Summer of Superman publishing initiative —  H/T to 13th Dimension reader Benjamin Simpson — but we’ve got the EXCLUSIVE DETAILS for you:

The Facsimile Edition lists for $9.99, with a Dan Mora homage variant that will run $10.99. There will also be a sketch variant ($10.99) and a foil cover version ($14.99).

DC has done this to rousing success with Detective Comics #27 — check out Mora’s homage for that one — so this was about as predictable as the sun rising in the east. (This is my second correct Superman Facsimile prediction in as many days, for those keeping score at home. Are you not entertained?)

Still glad it’s official though.

By the way, a comic’s current dimensions are typically 6-5/8″ x 10-3/16″. Golden Agers are larger, at 7-3/4” x 10-1/2”.

Oh, and Obligatory Price Comparison: If you happen upon an unslabbed original Action Comics #1, you’ll make the national news. An 8.5-graded, sealed copy sold for $6,000,000, including buyer’s premium, through Heritage Auctions in 2024. That’s the most expensive comic ever, folks.

Dan, do you have the numbers for some of the various facsimile editions? I’d be interested in knowing the printed run counts. Heck, what does a normal modern run look like for that matter?

I’ll most likely buy at least (1) copy of the regular edition. I’ve no interest in the other varieties. I already have the (4) copies of the modern size edition for the boys. They won’t notice or appreciate the difference. Had they done the Golden Age edition first then I would have gotten them then.

Still great news when DC publishes any facsimile from the Golden, Silver and or Bronze Age. Though I would really love to see more other than just Superman and BATMAN.

    • The numbers are out there somewhere, I’m sure, but I’m actually not that interested. DC is putting out 5-6 every month, with treasuries mixed in, plus the foil and sketch variants. Clearly, it’s a successful venture. Marvel has taken a different tack but it seems to be working for them too, though perhaps on a different scale. What’s clear is that these are now an established part of comics, which is fantastic!

As far as the variety, I have to disagree. Here are titles released or announced over the last several months alone: More Fun Comics #73, Brave and Bold #29, #30, #60 (JLA and Teen Titans issues), Crisis, Swamp Thing #37, Flash Comics #1, Green Lantern #59.

Batman will always dominate. They’re ramping up Superman now because of the movie, but there haven’t been that many overall.

      • Yes. You are correct. It was a Saturday morning firing off at the keyboard moment without really thinking. Guess what I’m really saying is can we get even “more” titles represented. I’d love a fresh copy of All Star #58. Certainly would love more of the classic Superman’s stuff. Any and all Cardy covers would be nice. Don’t think I don’t want more BATMAN too! I’d love a fresh #234. Shoot I’m on record as saying I’m good with a whole reprint of the eras.

My interest in the counts was to gauge the difference with the creators who publish through say a Kickstarter campaign.

In the end, great time to be a fan.
