EXCLUSIVE: Fans have been clamoring for this one…
Don’t you love making predictions that come true? I do. And I did here.
DC in April will finally release a Superman #233 Facsimile Edition, just about three months shy of the release of James Gunn’s movie.
Not just that, there will be a Super Powers variant cover, which you can check out here. (Four other Facsimiles are coming in April too!)
Dig the official solicitation, to be released formally by DC on Friday:
SUPERMAN #233 FACSIMILE EDITION
Written by DENNIS O’NEIL and E. NELSON BRIDWELL
Art by CURT SWAN and MURPHY ANDERSON
Cover by NEAL ADAMS
Super Powers variant cover by JASON GEYER and ALEX SAVIUK ($4.99 US)
$3.99 US | 36 pages
ON SALE 4/9/25
Both Superman and Clark Kent must adjust to big changes in the status quo as the lurking threat of Kryptonite is eliminated from the Man of Steel’s life—seemingly forever—and the mild-mannered Kansas newspaperman becomes WGBS-TV’s newest on-air reporter!
—
Several thoughts:
— Called it! When readers comment on what Facsimiles they want, this issue comes up all the time. I figured it would come in tandem with the Superman movie hype. Hooray for being right!
— Few covers live up to the “iconic” label but this one most certainly does — even if Neal Adams claimed he hated it.
— No foil or sketch covers are listed but sometimes that info is added later. I have to imagine there will be both. Just imagine how this would look in foil. And that Superman logo would be choice as a sketch cover, especially with an orange background.
— You will love the Super Powers variant.
— Another prediction: We’ll get an Action Comics #1 in true Golden Age dimensions by the time the movie comes out. It happened last year with Detective Comics #27 for Batman’s 85th.
— Obligatory Price Comparison: An unslabbed, VF original copy recently sold on ebay for $350.

“formally”….So what is the process that enables you Dan to learn this stuff beforehand? Tea leaves?
This is great news. They will look great in the ol’ spinner rack. Now if they’d just reprint the rest of the Bronze Age.

This is awesome news! Way to go Dan for making this materialize. 😉 And the Super Powers cover to boot! Excellent!
And despite loving this cover, and all the merchandise that sprung from it, I never noticed before this moment, today, right now, that Neal forgot to draw the little triangle in the upper right hand corner of Superman’s “S” shield!

More likely the inker or colorist omitted it. I did a cursory search for the original artwork and the examples I found all had it.

Gonna argue against my own post. I’m thinking examples that first showed were for poster reproductions. So I found a cover of the (hopefully) upcoming release of Adams’ original work. The one version uses Superman #233. It’s not there. https://www.nealadamsstore.com/Neal-Adams%E2%80%99-Classic-DC-Artist%E2%80%99s-Edition-Superman-Cover-Variant-Pre-Sale-Ltd100-Expected-April_p_2686.html

Ha! I love taking credit for things I can’t take credit for!

We did get this announcement earlier this week as part of Superman Day on April 18th: “Action Comics #1 Golden Age–Size Facsimile Edition featuring an homage cover by superstar artist Dan Mora”
January 24, 2025
Well there you have it!
January 24, 2025
I hope this “homage” cover will be a variant and not the “official” cover. If it doesn’t have the original cover, it’s just a reprint, not a Facsimile Edition. Case closed.
I also hope they don’t print this on “aged” paper like they did last year’s Batman Day facsimile of Detective Comics #27. The kids who bought Action Comics #1 as a new issue in 1938 didn’t buy a finished product that resembled an 87-year-old comic book.

When I was a kid, I had a mirror with that iconic Neal Adams Superman image embossed onto it. Probably something I picked up at Spencer Gifts at the mall back in the day. if you look closely, you can just make it out in this Instagram photo of the bookcase in my teenage bedroom: https://www.instagram.com/p/C5g_31buo6U/ (it’s on the top shelf).

Hey, Bea. Is the kryptonite rock from The Superman movie concessions? I still have mine. I recently repainted it with a fresh coat of glow-in-the-dark paint. It sits on my shelf under a dome glass display.
