Several thoughts:

— The new cover (top) features the classic Batman #227 by Neal Adams and replaces Adams’ similarly classic Batman #244 cover.

— Here’s why: The original retail description included Batman #217-244, Detective Comics #393-426, Limited Collectors’ Edition #C-51, and The Saga of Ra’s Al Ghul #1-4. So, basically they’re trimming Detective by four issues on the back end, and, more significantly, the three issues of the trilogy that ended the original Ra’s al Ghul saga. By extension, it makes sense that the covers from #C-51 and the Saga reprint miniseries are excluded too.

— I imagine, then, that Vol. 2 will take on the Batman #244 cover. Or maybe not. Either way, Batman #244 will be getting a Facsimile Edition in May.

  1. Unlike Marvel, DC only rarely includes the letters pages in their omnibus editions (Silver Age Wonder Woman and the Question volumes are notable exceptions). With this page count and contents listing, I’m optimistic the Bronze Age Batman volume will be a similar exception. Sounds like they are excluding the Robin & Batgirl back-up stories, which I am fine with. So that makes the majority of these stories 15 pagers, with a few book length 23-page stories, and a handful of all-reprint Batman Giants, which likely will only be represented by their covers. That leaves an average of 18 pages per issue (960 pgs / 53 issues), so plenty of room for all the covers and the letters pages.

I’ve said before I think it would be very interesting to follow the fans’ reactions to all the changes the Batman stories went through during this period. Looks like we might actually be getting a chance to see that!

  2. YESSSSss!!! I am literally counting down the days until this omnibus releases!! Can’t wait!!
Going to start setting aside funds so that I can buy each subsequent volume upon release!! I’ve been waiting for decades for DC to finally give us a complete run of the Bronze Age Batman.

  3. Hmmm….a bit disappointed about the page count being trimmed, but there are still many great stories to enjoy. I approve of the cover image change. Batman 227 is one of my favorite covers. I have a poster of it in my office.

I hate to lose Detective 424, which is one of my favorite Frank Robbins mystery stories, out of the omnibus. Detective 421 (the prison issue) was reprinted uncensored in a Showcase volume, but I can see where it would be problematic to print today. I’m kind of surprised that it passed the code in the 70s. I wonder if it will be censored.

Selfishly, I’m disappointed that DC hasn’t released a Silver Age volume 2. If there ever is one, I think that will run up to where my consecutive issue run of Batman starts.

    • I would love a second volume of the Batman and the Superman Omnibuses!

That tweaked version of the early Seventies Batman logo should be on the comics right now.

  4. I hate that oversized unwieldy and super heavy Omnibus format, I’ll save my money for when they do these in softcover trade paperback volumes (like the much-preferred DC Finest format). I am glad however to finally see some LONG OVERDUE Bronze Age material finally being reprinted though… Entire runs of 1970s Batman, Superman, JLA, Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, JSA, Teen Titans, Freedom Fighters, Kamandi, (and All-Star Squadron into the 1980s) need to be reprinted in trade paperback volumes as fast as Marvel is getting their Bronze Age material out into the popular Marvel Epic Collections…DC is missing the boat.
