DC Releases Story Lists for SUPERMAN and WONDER WOMAN 1950s Collections

Here’s what will be in the editions…

In August, we posted that DC was planning three editions celebrating its biggest heroes’ notable mid-century adventures: Superman in the Fifties, Batman in the Fifties and Wonder Woman in the Fifties. (Click here to check that out.)

The Superman and Batman editions were originally released nearly 20 years ago but this is a first for Wonder Woman. Nevertheless, the big questions were whether Batman and Superman would have the same contents — and what, exactly, would be in the Wonder Woman book.

Now we have some answers, according to the newly released DC solicitations:

These Superman tales from the 1950s reflect the optimism and excitement of that era. In this bygone decade, Superman teamed up with Robin, the Boy Wonder, and battled such outrageous foes as Bizarro and the Bride of Bizarro. Also included in this collection are the first appearances of Supergirl, Krypto, and Titano the Super-Ape, as well as tales of Superman’s Super-Magic Show and Superboy’s last day in Smallville. Collects stories from Superman #65, #79, #80, #96, #97, #127, Action Comics #151, #242, #252, #254, #255, World’s Finest Comics #68, #75, Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane #8, Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #13, Adventure Comics #210, and Showcase #9.

A few thoughts:

— It still looks like Superman has the same contents as the 2002 edition. The main difference is that this is a hardcover when the original was a softcover. There’s also still something of a discrepancy: This edition lists 328 pages while the original is under 200. So either that’s incorrect, or there will be more issues added by the time this actually goes to press. (The original also had essays and historical notes and I’m wagering those will be repeated here.)

— Unlike Superman, Wonder Woman is solicited as a paperback — but at the same price and page count. So, it’s quite possible that things will indeed change. But at least we have a better idea what to expect.

— The solicitations made no mention of the Batman book but that’s tentatively scheduled for May 2021.

  1. No list for BATMAN’s volume?

      • Yes you did. That’s what I get for quickly scanning the article in the beginning and then scrolling for the section on BATMAN. Seconds after I posted I caught the line at the end but no edit button.

  2. I feel like the discrepancies listed here still give us no actual idea whether the Superman volume is hardcover, softcover, straight reprint or expanded. Oh, DC!

Truthfully I expect this will be a straight reprint of the 2002 book, but I am *hoping* I’m wrong and they’ve picked up several more stories to make this really comprehensive. One can dream, anyway.
