DAN JURGENS and MIKE PERKINS Reunite for ‘BATMAN: FIRST KNIGHT’ SEQUEL This Fall

EXCLUSIVE: The DC Black Label miniseries The Bat-Man: Second Knight launches in September…

One of the most interesting Bat-projects of the last couple years was Dan Jurgens and Mike Perkins’ 2024 The Bat-Man: First Knight, an exploration of Batman’s earliest days — taking place in 1939 but told through a modern, sophisticated lens.

It was the perfect blend of subject manner and art, and gave us an early-days Batman story that was familiar but not a retread or adaptation of what’s come before.

Now, Jurgens and Perkins are back with the appropriately named The Bat-Man: Second Knight, which begins in September. Like the first series, it’s a mature-themed DC Black Label three-part miniseries.

Dig this EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK at the solicitation info and Issue #1 covers, all of which will be formally unveiled by DC Comics later Friday:

The year is 1940. Most of the Western world is embroiled in a war against a fascist regime whose march across Europe shows no sign of defeat. With the specter of global war looming, it’s a time of fear and paranoia for those living in Gotham. It’s only been a few months since the city was rescued from undead monsters by the masked vigilante known as The Bat-Man, but a vicious killer has been on a murder spree that’s taking the city to its breaking point. Bodies are turning up in theatrically gruesome ways… all staged with the killer’s calling card: a hangman’s noose. While The Bat-Man endeavors to solve the spate of murders, a young reporter from the Daily Star named Lois Lane arrives in Gotham. Meant to cover a movie premiere, it doesn’t take long for Lane to find herself caught in the grips of a new villain in Gotham. One whose mastery of fear will plunge the city into chaos!

A few thoughts:

— The colorist is Mike Spicer and the letterer is Simon Bowland, both of whom were on The Bat-Man: First Knight.

— Instant speculation: 1940. “Second Knight.” What are the chances Bruce Wayne visits the circus by the time this one is over?

— On Thursday, we reported that a 1940 Batman #1 Facsimile Edition in Golden Age dimensions is coming in September. The obvious reason for the timing is the upcoming Batman #1, by Matt Fraction, Jorge Jimenez, and co. But the Facsimile pairs even better with this!

    • I definitely enjoyed the first. I didn’t need some of the language. For me, a mature BATMAN story doesn’t need the “F” word dropped here and there. To me, it (mature) means (while I love the Silver Age) that this world doesn’t have a Bat-Mite etc elements. What I have to decide is do I get the individual issues or just wait for the TBK/hardcover edition.
