HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!
Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to… — Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension The Art of the Mighty Thor, Dark Horse/Marvel. Constructive criticism time: Dark Horse started its Bullpen Books line with Marvel two years ago, and I gotta say, the publicity for it has been seriously lacking. We got The Art of The Amazing Spider-Man first, then The Art of the Fantastic Four and neither has made much of a blip. This week is the Thor edition, featuring original and published art by Jack Kirby and Walt Simonson, among many others. And it’s 10″ x 14″, which is close to treasury size. The 200-page hardcover lists for $59.99. Since we believe in giving the people what they want, check out a SNEAK PEEK over here. — Barbara Gordon: Breakout #2, DC. Read the first issue. I liked it. Taking this one issue by issue. — Comic Book Creator #44 and RetroFan #45, TwoMorrows. Any kind of Carmine Infantino spotlight and I am there. Plus, I plan to sit on the porch with a Slurpee, my 1976 baseball cards and dig into RF’s Bicentennial issue. (TwoMorrows also has Alter Ego #200 — Roy Thomas spotlights himself — and Back Issue #168, in which there be dragons.) — Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #23, DC. The only reason this is getting reprinted is the rare Adam Hughes variant cover from 2006. Fine by me. The original costs a ton. (There are also foil and logo sketch versions.) Plus, we get a Super Powers cover out of the deal! — Supergirl #14, DC. I dropped Supergirl pretty early on — it’s me, I’m not the audience — and I’m not reading Reign of the Superboys because it’s not my thang, either. But it’s a kick that they’re digging Matrix out of the back of the closet — and she’s got a groovy outfit (assuming that’s her on the cover). — Avengers: Armageddon #1, Marvel. Another Alex Ross Marvel Dimensions cover. There’re also ones for Mortal Thor #11 and X-Men #31: Speaking of, I neglected to mention last week that the Doctor Strange one was set for last Wednesday. — Black Cat #11, Marvel. Another really cool variant, this one by Phil Noto. Love the use of negative space. (For another of the 1,000,006 covers, click here.) —...
