CATWOMAN’s Classic Outfit May Be Returning, but DARWYN COOKE’s Is Still the Best
DESPOP TUESDAYS… Last week we reported here at 13th Dimension that Catwoman’s classic dress-and-cape ensemble would be returning in Batman & Robin: Year One — Dynamic Duos, the latest maxiseries by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee. The response was really strong, and it’s no wonder. It’s an outfit that’s near and dear to many hearts, including my own. But despite its sentimental appeal, I can’t say it’s Selina Kyle’s best costume. Instead, that honor belongs to the one that was designed by Darwyn Cooke for the Catwoman series that launched in 2001, 25 years ago this fall: Cooke’s outfit is as exciting and sexy as any she’s ever worn, but it’s also practical: indelibly a comics construct while at the same time something you could actually imagine a master cat thief wearing to work. Purely by coincidence, Des Taylor is working on an illustration that homages November 2001’s Catwoman #1 cover by Cooke. Dig this: And here’s the original: Purr-fect! — Want more DESPOP TUESDAYS?
