THE LAUGHING FISH: Always a Classic — in Comics or Animation

DESPOP TUESDAYS! A couple days ago, SUNDAY FUNNIES WITH KERRY CALLEN featured a riff on one of the greatest Batman/Joker stories of all time — The Laughing Fish, by Steve Englehart, Marshall Rogers, and Terry Austin, from 1977’s Detective Comics #475-476. But wait, there’s more! The story, as you know, was adapted for Batman: The Animated Series — combined with The Joker’s Five-Way Revenge!, by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams, from 1973’s Batman #251. Well guess what: Our pal Des has done a fab print highlighting the episode, and boy is it grand. Dig this: The 18″ x 24″ print — fully licensed — was one of six Des did for various eps, and it sold out when released. But he has artist’s proofs — signed and numbered — available at his website. Groovy! — Want more DESPOP TUESDAYS? Come back next week! Want a commission? Buy prints? Buy Des’ comics? When he’s not working on his own properties or churning out commissions, Des spends his spare time… working some more, hating Arsenal and raising his two baby daughters, Scarlett and...

Cliff Chiang’s Terrific CATWOMAN: LONELY CITY to Get ABSOLUTE EDITION

Well-deserved treatment of an excellent story… Cliff Chiang’s Catwoman: Lonely City — one of the best Batfamily stories this decade — is getting the Absolute Edition treatment in July 2027. Dig the official solicitation info: CATWOMAN: LONELY CITY: ABSOLUTE EDITION Written by CLIFF CHIANG Art and cover by CLIFF CHIANG It’s been ten years since Gotham’s heroes were killed in the massacre known as “Fools’ Night” and Selina Kyle took the fall. Now she’s out of prison and back in an all-new Gotham City that’s a whole lot cleaner and safer…at the cost of its citizens’ freedom. Most ex-cons would be happy to leave the past behind. However, Selina isn’t most people. She’s Catwoman. And before she can hang up her claws and whip for good, she needs to know: Who or what is “Orpheus”? To find out, she’ll need to pull off the biggest caper of her career with help from some of Gotham’s most notorious former rogues by breaking into the most dangerous place on Earth—the Batcave! From Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman, Paper Girls) comes a tale of rogues, romance, revenge, and redemption set in a world without Batman. Catwoman: Lonely City: Absolute Edition collects Catwoman: Lonely City #1-4 in DC’s prestige Absolute format, featuring exclusive behind-the-scenes extras, a collectible clamshell case, a souvenir keychain, and postcards with exclusive art. $100.00 US | 488 Pages | 8 1/8″ x 12 1/4″ | Hardcover ON SALE 7/20/27 — If the description sounds like “The Dark Cat Returns” or “Old Lady Selina,” you’re right on the money. But Chiang takes the trope and keeps it fresh, with a briskly paced story filled with drama, action, and a certain measure of humor. Plus, the art, which at times winks at David Mazzucchelli’s Batman: Year One, is superb. Chiang is one of the very best in the business today, and he hits every note right. — MORE — Cliff Chiang Channels JOSE LUIS GARCIA-LOPEZ’s DC Style Guide For New WORLD’S FINEST Cover.
