An ANNIVERSARY TRIP: Simple beauty… — UPDATED 9/14/26: Filmation’s The Adventures of Batman premiered 58 years ago, on Sept. 14, 1968! Perfect time to reprint this piece from Nov.17, 2022. Far out! — Dan — In case you missed the news earlier this week, Warner Bros. Discovery will be releasing a remastered Blu-ray set of Filmation’s 1968 The Adventures of Batman in 2023. (Click here for all the funky details.) Anyway, that put me on the hunt for 13 original animation cels to pretty up the place. Most of these came from Heritage Auctions’ website and some of the backgrounds feature generic art. But the cels themselves are gloriously groovy. As best I can tell, they’re all 1968 vintage, as opposed to being from 1977’s New Adventures of Batman. (The provenance isn’t always accurate or clear.) Either way, these are fab — so dig ’em. Van Johnson’s Minstrel doesn’t get the attention he deserves, especially since he’s not only one of the few Bat-Villains that, within the fiction of “The Minstrel’s Shakedown/Barbequed Batman,” the Caped Crusader’s never met before, but he’s also said to be Batman’s equal or better in terms of being an electronic genius.
