Cancelled ABSOLUTE GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT Re-Emerging as Deluxe Edition

The classic appears to be coming back after all — but in a different format…

In November, DC Comics solicited Absolute Gotham by Gaslight, a high-end edition of the acclaimed 1989 story by Brian Augustyn, Mike Mignola and P. Craig Russell (plus its sequel Master of the Future and two other stories from this universe).

Not long after, however, came word that the book was cancelled.

Now, it looks like it’s back — but as a Deluxe Edition, according to a listing on Amazon.

Check out the new description:

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight — The Deluxe Edition

In the Victorian era, an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike?

Some would live in terror. Others would rest easier.

Only one man would take no notice at all… a man with other matters to attend to. His name? No one knows for sure. Most people know him only as Jack.

Jack the Ripper.

Brian Augustyn (The Flash), Mike Mignola (Hellboy), and Eduardo Barreto (The New Teen Titans) spin the classic tale of the Victorian-era Bat-Man’s encounter with the Butcher of Whitechapel and a crazed prophet determined to prevent Gotham City from entering the 20th century, presented for the first time in the slipcased Absolute format. Collects Gotham by Gaslight, Batman: Master of the Future, Convergence: Shazam! #1-2, and Countdown Presents the Search for Ray Palmer: Gotham by Gaslight.

A few thoughts:

— The 240-page hardcover lists for $34.99 and is due in September, according to the listing. However, the standard caveat applies: DC hasn’t officially solicited this edition, which means anything can change. (And they can obviously still change after that.)

— It looks like the book will still include those later stories, like Jeff Parker and Doc Shaner’s superb Convergence: Shazam! Very cool.

— The listing doesn’t give the book’s dimensions but Deluxe Editions are typically larger than standard trade hardcovers and paperbacks. Still gotta say that it would have been groovy to see this in the Absolute format (which is incorrectly referenced in the blurb above). But, hey, maybe someday…
