BRAND NEW DAY: Game-Changing AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #546 to Get Facsimile Edition in JUNE

EXCLUSIVE! Coming a month out from the new movie…

I like being surprised by what Facsimile Editions a company puts out, but I also like it when I see it coming and correctly predict it.

This is the latter. Marvel in June will be releasing 2008’s reality-shattering The Amazing Spider-Man #546 — the first issue of the controversial Brand New Day era.

Because, y’see, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth movie in the Tom Holland cycle, will be hitting theaters in July.

Dig the solicitation info, which will be released officially later this month by Marvel. (There’s also a second Marvel Facsimile coming that month. Click here.):

Buncha thoughts:

— I can’t believe it’s been more than 18 years since this came out. The way Peter and Mary Jane’s marriage was undone still sticks in some craws, but at least it wasn’t Superboy-Prime punching a cosmic wall or anything.

— I’m not exactly a genius for predicting this and have been forecasting it for some time. Besides the upcoming movie, the comics’ Brand New Day era followed the aftermath of Civil War, which was just re-released in full as seven Facsimile Editions. (Civil War is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and Marvel has a bunch of homage variant covers coming in celebration, by the way.)

— Marvel is not planning to reprint the subsequent, initial Brand New Day issues, just the first.

— Like I mentioned, Marvel has two Facsimiles in June, not counting Avengers/JLA #2, which is being published by DC. Links below!

Obligatory Price Comparison: An unslabbed, NM original copy recently sold on eBay for about $35.

  1. Instead of getting a facsimile of this comic, is there any way of undoing the original?

I’m going to need to see the data on that one. I can’t believe it’s been ~24 years since I last bought monthly Spider-Man.

  3. Technically, the first issue of the OMD era was the 2007 Free Comic Book Day issue that introduced Jackpot. 🙂

  4. I suppose there’s going to be the usual consternation that this isn’t a golden or silver age reprint. (Keep in mind that Marvel doesn’t have a critical mass of “key” golden age books outside of a few specific issues like Captain America #1 or Marvel Comics #1.) The fact that this book is 19 years old and is almost old enough to vote really should recontextualize this issue.

19 years is a pretty shocking number in context. My daughter had been born almost a year earlier and she’s over halfway through college now. This is an *old* book despite the tone and content being relatively on par with today’s comics. Although 2000-2007 is an interesting transitory period for comics and One More Day is another sign that the content and tone of comics were changing again. I’d really put around 2002 and the start of “Nu Marvel” (which included JMS’s run which preceded OMD) as the shift out of the Bronze/Dark Age of comics and moving into the Media Age. Still, OMD is a noticeable part of that shift–even if the premise of the shift and Peter’s deal with Satan is a terrible precursor for it.

  5. The only reason this is coming out is because the new movie has the same name. Hopefully it’s much better than the comic was.

  6. BTW, current count of Amazing Spider-Man facsimile issues: 21, plus one annual. There’s also five ancilliary Spider-Man facsimiles (Amazing Fantasy #15 and four others.) This is tied with (Uncanny) X-Men, which also has 21 facsimilies plus Giant-Size #1. (Fantastic Four comes in third with 17 facsimiles issues and an annual.)
