BIG, BIG OVERSTREET PRICE GUIDE #50 Features Throwback Cover

EXCLUSIVE: The oversized edition of the comics price guide has a very special angle…

You may recall that in January, we broke the news that Gemstone Publishing would be producing The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #1 Facsimile Edition, in celebration of the industry bible’s 50th anniversary. Click here for more info, but here’s a gander at the cover, which naturally mimics the first guide from 1970:

Groovy, right? I myself am really looking forward to it.

But Gemstone — the publishing arm of Diamond Comic Distributors — has another neat surprise in store: The cover of The Big, Big Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #50 is a modern take on the original.

Check it out:

The cover was designed by Gemstone’s creative director, Mark Huesman, and I really dig how he kept a number of the companies in the same spots they were in on the #1 front — which was drawn by Robert Overstreet himself.

As the name suggests, the Big, Big version of the guide has larger print than the standard edition. It contains the same pricing info but none of the articles or ads found in the regular version.

Here’s the official solicitation info, which Gemstone will be formally releasing in the coming days:

The Big, Big Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #50

Celebrate the Golden Anniversary of Overstreet with The Big, Big Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #50, the oversized, limited edition version of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. This version of the Bible of serious comic book collectors, dealers and historians features just the pricing from the standard editions of the book, but none of the articles. Very popular with those who use it, it seems to sell out faster each year.

A few thoughts:

— I eat this sort of thing up and I imagine a lot of collectors and dealers will too.

— Here’s what Gemstone Vice-President of Publishing J.C. Vaughn had to say: “Normally, we feature cover art on the Big, Big, just as we do the regular editions of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. As a matter of fact, since we revived the Big, Big with #42, our cover artists have included Kevin Eastman, Billy Tucci, Francesco Francavilla and Georges Jeanty with Karl Story, among others. In this case, though, we really wanted to have a throwback to CBPG #1.

β€œOver the last five or six years, this edition has sold out faster and faster at Diamond. Every once in a while we have a few individual copies left over at Gemstone, but by and large the serious collectors and dealers who utilize it have shown a real preference for having The Big, Big Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide on hand. This is particularly true for those of us who prefer the – ahem – larger print.”

— The 1,200-page softcover will be available through comic shops and lists for $49.50. It’s due to be released July 22 — but you can preorder it now directly through Gemstone. (Click here).
