Buncha thoughts:
— If you were there, then you know. But if you weren’t, the 1989 launch of this book — which capitalized on the era’s movie-driven Batmania — was such a big deal when it came out. “The First New ‘Solo’ Batman Book Since 1940!” the cover boasted. Today, such a thing is commonplace.
— And the four covers — each a different hue — were designed to trap suckers into believing “Ya gotta get ’em all!” I, of course, was one of those suckers.
— In fact, wouldn’t it be a gas if DC released the omnibus in the same four colors?
— The series was great at giving top-flight creative teams a crack at doing a complete Batman story, but the notion that these tales were supposed to chronicle Batman’s Modern Age early days — jumping off from Batman: Year One and Year Two — was left to the side fairly quickly. As a continuity obsessive at the time, it drove me crazy. Long in recovery, I think I’d like to go back and give a lot of these another shot.

Those bland covers were such a turn off. I’m sure I own copies in my collection of these first issues but I’ve no emotional connection to the stories found within.

I’d rather have this material reprinted in 2 DC Finest volumes at $39 each rather than one not-fun-to-read heavy cinderblock at $150…
Great that you’re finally reprinting the material, these stories are long-overdue to be reprinted, but can we please stop with this over-sized, over-priced, unwieldy Omnibus format…?

There are a lot of us who prefer the oversized hardcover format to the paperback format. DC’s strategy seems to be to print the material in both formats.

I’d be fine if they do it in both formats if some of you prefer Omnis, but so far I’ve seen a load of material printed in Omnis with none of it seen in any future planned DC Finest volume solicitations sadly…

I wholeheartedly agree. not only are the oversized hardcovers much more sturdy. But the quality of the paper and the print is much more sharp in the hardcovers.
I bought myself the DC finest case of the chemical syndicate. When reading a few stories I couldn’t help but notice how thin the print looked.
I pulled out my golden age omnibus For comparison.
The omnibus print is FAR superior! Bolder colors, sharper edges, And much better paper quality.
Plus, the fact that the binding of paperbacks is such poor quality.
I had forgotten just how much I hate the glued binding of paperbacks. And the way the covers curl after the book has been read…
Give me HARDCOVERS any day of the week. I like my books to be durable.

Back in the post-Crisis era of the 1980s and early ’90s, Batman had four prestige level stories: TDKR, Year One, The Killing Joke, and Arkham Asylum. But, with the exception of the Barr-Davis run on ‘Tec (which I still love), I found the regular monthly books (Batman and Detective) to be mostly underwhelming. But LOTDK, although not perfect, was generally much more interesting and ambitious. For me, this was how to do a monthly Batman book right. I found it on a par with The Question and the Longbow Hunters era Green Arrow monthly series. If the aforementioned prestige level Batman stories were the comics equivalent of movies, LOTDK (and GA and The Question) were the comics equivalent of a good HBO series. So I’m really looking forward to revisiting this material.

This is one comic run that I still have all the issues of as well as all 7 annuals as well as the 3 Halloween specials that would later be released as Haunted Knight.
Not every arc was a masterpiece but there definitely are some Gems within. I always enjoy stories depicting Batman early into his career.

Yes. It was 4 different colors all “variants” for issue #1.
And the truly funny part is they could easily be removed to show the actual painted cover underneath that better matched with covers for 2 through 5, the rest of the “Shaman” arc.
And yes, I removed that simple cover from my copy just because I really didn’t like that it obstructed the beautiful illustration of the tribal mask.
