Behold JERRY ORDWAY’s Fab ’70s SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE Magazine Cover

A BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE to Christopher Reeve…

It’s no wonder Jerry Ordway became a comics legend. Have you ever seen this cover for The Comic Reader #165?

Some time ago, I saw it online and was so entranced by it that I had to track down a copy for my collection. And since it’s Christopher Reeve’s birthday — he was born 72 years ago, on Sept. 25, 1952 — I wanted to share it with you, in case you’ve never had the pleasure.

The issue is pub-dated February 1979 and Ordway had this to say about it in a 2021 online post: Superman: The Movie was such a big movie for me, and I did several drawings inspired by it. One wound up as the cover for The Comic Reader.

He didn’t need to say any more because this fab piece speaks for itself.

It’s a real keeper.

  1. A terrific piece of art by a great artist. I wish Ordway had done a full comic adaptation of the first two Superman films, after the success of his Batman ‘89 adaptation. Maybe he still could be persuaded to do so?

And thank you for noting the birthday of the unforgettable Chris Reeve. By coincidence, I watched Superman II this week—for the first time in years, but the 20th time overall (beginning with its theatrical debut)—and I was enchanted all over again. God bless him.

    • Thanks for bringing this beautiful artwork to my attention, Warren. Now I REALLY want to see an Ordway Superman 1 & 2 adaptation. Make it a tabloid!
