BATMAN & ROBIN: YEAR ONE #12 — CHRIS SAMNEE’s Back Cover Is the Perfect Series Capper

A timeless image…

Mark Waid and Chris Samnee’s Batman & Robin: Year One #12 is out and so the series is over. I’ve written a ton about it, and deservedly so, but Samnee and DC have provided the perfect postscript — and I’m not even talking about the story’s wonderful final pages.

Behold the timelessly evocative back cover that supplanted precious ad space — recalling ad-free backs in famous Golden Age comics:

(Those names: Waid, Samnee, colorist Matheus Lopes, colorist Clayton Cowles, senior editor Andrew Marino, and group editor Rob Levin.)

You want to hear something stupid? I love this so much, I bought a second copy of the issue just so I could bag, board and display this, back cover in the front.

A marvelous finish — though I am hoping for a sequel called Batman & Robin: The Dynamic Duo.

  3. When you give this partnership some thought, you can’t help but (boy) wonder why Bruce would have decided to put Dick into this much possible danger as his partner. But this illustration depicts what’s likely the best superhero pairing ever.

    • Have you read the series? That question is fundamental to the story.

And what a story. And what a bonus image – beautiful!

  4. I’m really REALLY hoping that this team will be given the chance by DC Comics to create a BATMAN & ROBIN Year Two.

    • Me too, but if they do I’d love to see shorter stories – perhaps four three-parters with one villain each, the subplots, obviously, threading through.

      • @martingray1 that’s a really great idea! As much as I enjoyed this series, a format of shorter story arcs would have been awesome. Even if they varied from 2 to 3 issue arcs even with the occasional one shot.

Haha! DC should just take that idea with this creative team and make it an ongoing series. That’d be a MUST for the pull list.

  5. Has anyone heard anything about the collected hardcover, if it’s going to be standard size or deluxe?
