BATMAN AND ROBIN: YEAR ONE — Wouldn’t You Love a MATT WAGNER Variant Cover?

We sure would! And, hey, it’s his birthday!

Hey, it’s Matt Wagner’s birthday! Happy birthday, Matt! (I hear there will be 63 candles on his cake.)

Anyway, it’s time for a birthday salute. Sometimes we do Matt’s covers, sometimes his sketches.

Well, over the last few months, we’ve run a number of galleries culled from Matt’s “Characterthon,” in which he was posting on Facebook a random sketch a day, such as this beaut:

We had one more installment planned — he finished with a run of Batman-related images — but then I saw his birthday coming up and here we are! A 13 SKETCHES birthday celebration!

Anyway, when I came upon his Batman and Robin portrait pairing — you can find it below — the record needle in my mind scratched loudly: “Man,” I said to myself, “wouldn’t it be great if Matt did a variant cover for DC’s upcoming Batman and Robin: Year One, by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee?”

Well, wouldn’t it? It would. I mean after all, his fabulous Batman and the Monster Men and Batman and the Mad Monk took place just before Dick Grayson became Robin.

Besides, Matt’s an expert on all sorts of bats — he and Kelley Jones are publishing Dracula Book II — The Brides, the latest in their telling of the vampire’s saga. It’s on Kickstarter as we speak, so send Matt (and Kelley) a present and go pledge. Click here for more info.

Plus, Matt also has a fancy new website — check it out!

Now, let’s fly back to Gotham!

  1. These are fantastic. It’s a shame there’s no follow option for his Facebook page. I have to remember to go check it more often!
