ALEX ROSS Reveals the Secrets Behind This Brilliant CAPTAIN MARVEL Illustration

An INSIDE LOOK at a visual love letter…

Alex Ross is well-known for many things, but one of them is a love for the original Captain Marvel — and the next issue of Roy Thomas’ Alter Ego puts the modern master in the spotlight.

Ross has created two gorgeous tapestries that celebrate the Big Red Cheese and the legions of characters he inspired. Both are in Alter Ego #166, out Oct. 14. The first one includes Ross’ deep-dive commentary that is worth the $9.95 cover price alone.

I’d show it off here but that’d be giving too much away. Instead, we’ll focus on the second one, along with Ross’ intro and key to all the players.

But before we shout “Shazam!” check out the table of contents, which includes an in-depth piece on fellow Cap artist Kurt Schaffenberger:

OK, then. Here’s Ross.

SHAZAM!

Alter Ego #166 is due out Oct. 14. It’ll be available at comics shops and other magazine sellers. But you can also order it directly through publisher TwoMorrows. Click here.

  1. There’s a whole second list? I hope they remembered to include Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. He’d say “Shazam, Shazam, Shazam!” three times in a row like that, but he never turned into anything.

  2. That very illustration that Alex Ross did is absolute epicness in and of itself.

  3. I wish he would have added black Captain Marvel of PreCrisis Earth 1 created by Roy Thomas and drawn by Don Newton.
