I’ve been a fan of Fred Hembeck’s since his days doing strips for DC’s Daily Planet pages. (Which I miss terribly, by the way.)

He’s contributed to 13th Dimension in the past — always an honor for me — and I can’t look at his work without smiling.

Hembeck turns 67 on Thursday — he was born Jan. 30, 1953 — so it’s time for a 13 FUNKY ILLUSTRATIONS birthday salute. Why not 13 COVERS? Because I’m fond of highlighting the sketch cards Fred sells on eBay, which is where I found the selection below. (Click here for his store.)

Even though I will forever equate Hembeck with DC, this year’s selection is all Marvel, for no particular reason other than that’s the kind of mood I’m in this second.
