13 EXTRAORDINARY SPLASH PAGES: A GEORGE PEREZ Birthday Celebration

One of comics’ greatest creators turns 67!

Retired artist George Perez — born 67 years ago on June 9, 1954 — had a long, storied career where he made his mark working on the biggest titles and with the biggest heroes from both DC and Marvel (let alone other publishers).

Typically, we do a 13 COVERS birthday tribute, rotating titles from year to year. This time, however, we’re going with 13 SPLASH PAGES from the first 13 issues of The New Teen Titans.

Why Titans? Because I recently started a re-read and my eyes kept popping out of my head from images I hadn’t seen in decades — not since the ’80s when NTT was at the top of my reading pile.

Now, not all of these are strictly splash pages. Some are two-page spreads and some have additional panels that enhance the narrative. But what they all have in common is larger than life, extraordinarily detailed illustrations guaranteed to blow your mind.

  1. The thing about Perez’ big splash pages is that they are 100% readable. You can easily, at a glance understand what everything is, and what’s going on. A lot of comics artists can pile on the details, but few can make it understandable. A nod should also go to Adrienne Roy for the coloring job, that helps this all work.
