13 DAYS OF THE NEAL ADAMS GALLERY: Speedy is a Junkie!

A shocker more than 45 years later…

Neal Adams’ permanent art gallery at his Midtown Manhattan studio is now complete and we’re giving you an EXCLUSIVE inside look with 13 DAYS OF THE NEAL ADAMS GALLERY.

Each day, we’re highlighting one of the pieces of art that adorns the walls of the gallery, complete with Neal’s EXCLUSIVE commentary. You’ll see a diverse selection of pages and covers featuring the characters for which Adams is best known.

The gallery, which is open to the public, is located at 15 W. 39th Street. Admission is free but you have to call first before you come over (212-869-4170). For tons more info on the gallery and what you can see — and buy — there, click here.

One of the things that struck me while walking around the gallery was how frustrated I am that there still hasn’t been a Neal Adams artist’s edition compendium of his work. I know that there are a world of complicating factors, not the least of which is that a lot of Adams’ Silver and Bronze Age original artwork is lost to the ages for a variety of reasons. Sad but true.

Good thing Adams is still a drawing machine. He works. And with his skill, he’s able to go back and re-create some of the classic covers people would want in such a volume. Hell, he flipped the script with DC on that point earlier this year. (Click here for the NEAL ADAMS MONTH extravaganza.)

But for the purposes of the gallery, he’s painstakingly recreated covers like Green Lantern/Green Arrow #85, where it’s revealed that Speedy is a junkie:

This scan doesn’t do justice to what you see hanging in the gallery, I’ll tell you. When you see it up close, it’s as if it arrived intact from 1971. (Fans can see it up close. Fans with deeper pockets can buy it.)

Here’s Adams on the cover — and the nature of recreations:

“I don’t take a lot of time and energy to do comic-book cover recreations but this one was worth the time and energy. I don’t think we’ll ever get the original back but this recreation is dead on.”

It is.
