Because the greatest super-team ever deserves its own GEORGE PEREZ Birthday Salute.
When I was 13, George Perez was it. I mean, he was The Guy.
This was 1980 and The New Teen Titans was launching — quickly becoming a smash. This was the perfect comic book for an adolescent boy: high adventure, soap opera, an ensemble with a central character immensely important to me (Dick Grayson) — and hot girls.
Neal Adams wasn’t doing much in the way of comics by this time and Marshall Rogers had already departed Detective Comics. Carmine Infantino had long ceased being the DC artistic mainstay. Those guys, by this time, were all in the Realm of the Mighty Back Issue.
George Perez was new, brand new, every month.
He’d already been kicking around for a few years but I didn’t really become aware of him until the Titans took over DC and challenged the X-Men for comics superiority. (In fact, I recall being greatly disappointed that Perez wasn’t given the art chores for that epic crossover. “Jeez, the X-Men have already won!” I thought.)
Anyway, I recently paid homage to The New Teen Titans here. But with it being George Perez‘s birthday, here I go, back to Titans Tower.
(Oh, and if you want to check out my earlier George Perez 13 COVERS piece, covering his other work, click here.)
