13 COVERS: RUSS HEATH and His Days at ATLAS

 A BIRTHDAY SALUTE: It wasn’t always DC…

By PETER BOSCH

While the late Russ Heath — born 98 years ago, on Sept. 29, 1926 — is best known for his art on war comics at DC, I truly feel he honed that craft at Atlas Comics (earlier known as Timely, later known as Marvel).

For this year’s birthday tribute, here are 13 COVERS that not only highlight Heath’s war comics at Atlas but also show what he could do with other genres.

Combat #1 (June 1952)

Combat #9 (Feb. 1953)

War Comics #23 (Jan. 1954)

War Comics #31 (Jan. 1955)

Navy Action #2 (Oct. 1954)

Lorna, the Jungle Girl #7 (May 1954)

Marvel Tales #130 (Jan. 1955)

Mystery Tales #26 (Feb. 1955)

Uncanny Tales #48 (Oct. 1956)

Two-Gun Kid #33 (Oct. 1956)

Western Outlaws #3 (June 1954)
