13 COVERS: A RUSS HEATH Birthday Celebration

A DC war book stalwart…

The late Russ Heath — born 97 years ago on Sept. 29, 1926 — was an artist’s artist. The average fan may not be familiar with much of his work but diehards and professionals are well aware of his contributions to the craft, a penciller of great detail and impact.

He’s best known for DC’s midcentury war books and adventure series (like the so-much-fun Sea Devils) and for this year’s 13 COVERS birthday salute, we bring you a 1950s-’60s selection from Our Army at War, among other titles.

Ten-hut!

  1. Heath’s interior art on OAAW from after he took over for Kubert – issues 200-250 or thereabouts – are some of the best-drawn war comics of all time. Nobody drew better explosions or grounded their action in space more convincingly than Russ Heath; a real master of the form.
