13 COVERS: An ALEX SAVIUK Birthday Celebration

The Spidey mainstay turns 70…

My personal Spider-Man Mount Rushmore of Artists is, in chronological order, Steve Ditko, John Romita, Gil Kane and Ross Andru. But how about workhorses like Alex Saviuk, who toiled on the Spidey newspaper strip from 2003 to 2019 and had a healthy run on Web of Spider-Man in the ’80s and ’90s? Dude deserves his own props, y’know?

So here’s a 13 COVERS birthday salute — Saviuk was born 70 years ago on Aug. 17, 1952 — to a web-slinging stalwart.

Right on.

  1. Happy Birthday, Alex! He was easily one of my favorite consistent Spider-Man artists of the late 80’s-90’s! Much like Mark Bagley, he helped great writers tell great stories, without artwork that screamed OH MY GOD, THIS IS HOOOOT! And I respect and love artists more that can tell solid stories with the writing instead of trying to sell prints in comic books!

  2. I noticed a couple of those covers didn’t include Spider-Man on the cover (except for in the corner by the logo). I wonder how often that happened.
