13 COVERS: A RICH BUCKLER Birthday Celebration

The late artist was born 76 years ago, on Feb. 6, 1949…

As I wrote last year, the late Rich Buckler — who was born 76 years ago — had a fairly eclectic career, working on about 1,000,006 titles and characters.

So what better way to celebrate his birthday this year than with 13 COVERS from team books? In this case, DC.

Marvel next year? Who knows?

Right on.

  1. That JLA 210 cover is one of those images that’s constantly imprinted on my brain. It was one I bought as a back-issue bin purchase as a pre-teen, because… look at all of the characters on the cover! You just knew you were going to get a packed story!

  2. Finally! A 13 Covers feature where I’ve read every one of the comics themselves.

  4. Man,Buckler left too early. I met him at the Plano Con about 20 yrs ago. Was about 6 o’clock in the evening. Seemed I was the only one in the place at that hour. And certainly the only one at his table at that hour. His wife (I think )was his handler at the table. They were both very nice. He was very humble and would not accept a gratuity for his signature on my Deathlok comic. He really was not fully appreciated during his lifetime.

  5. Buckler was a good cover artist. Too bad DC saddled him with a really incompatible inker (Jack Abel) for most of them.

  6. Love your choices…Buckler is one of my all-time cover favorites and you chose some of my personal favorite DC covers he did.

Does anyone know where the original art to the covers of
    Freedom Fighters #9, 14,
Secret Society of Super Villains #8,
    and Teen Titans #52 are?

If so, please reach out to me, I’ll pay good cash for the original art to those covers AND a “finders fee” for anyone that helps me find them out in the wild… JONMANKUTA@aol.com

I already own the original cover art to a lot of his old covers, including the covers to JLA #148, Secret Society #9, 13, and Teen Titans #51 as shown by you guys on here…

His work inked by Jack Abel for DC in the 70s was really great…

  7. I love these, but I’ll always favor his Marvel Bronze Age Jack Kirby-ish phase (and his Deathlok work). So good!

  9. Such an amazing collection of covers by such a talent. That era of the Teen Titans was my absolute favorite and those covers were a huge part of it.

  11. Some really great stuff here. When I think of Rich Buckler,, I mostly think of Marvel. I didn’t realize (or just forgot) that he did so much DC work.
