13 COVERS: A JIM APARO Hall of Fame Salute

Team-ups aplenty…

Some of the most illustrious names in comics were inducted into the Eisner Hall of Fame at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, so this week we’re celebrating the work of an artful quintet of 13th Dimension faves — Bill Sienkiewicz, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Jim Aparo, Dave Stevens and Wendy Pini, who was chosen with her writing partner Richard Pini. (Writer/exec Paul Levitz was also among the class and you can check out THE PAUL LEVITZ INTERVIEWS here.)

Over five days, we’re bringing you five 13 COVERS galleries — and now it’s Aparo in the spotlight.

Naturally, the first title I think of when I think of Aparo is The Brave and the Bold. I’ve run Aparo B&B galleries before but I’m doing so again because it’s a great way to see the artist’s take not only on Batman — the character with which he’s most associated — but a broad selection of DC heroes and villains, as well.

Is this every great B&B cover he did? Hardly. I didn’t even include two of my faves because they were 100-pagers and the images are just too dang small, all things considered. But this is a fairly representative sample. (I’ve even included a couple of wild cards. You’ll see.)

Right on.

  1. One of my all time favorite artist. I especially loved his earlier BB covers. Besides BATMAN his Spectre/Demon were tops.

  2. Mr. Aparo is to be commended for sure. The vintage Batman™ covers he did that you selected are absolutely on point.

  3. Awesome selection of covers. I started collecting in the Fall of 1976, right in his B&B heyday. Aparo will always be one of my favorites.

I just have one question. How in the **** was Aparo not already in the hall of fame?
