13 COVERS: A CARMINE INFANTINO Birthday Celebration

A colorful time in Gotham…

The late, great Carmine Infantino was born 97 years ago on May 24, 1925. To this day, he remains on my Mount Rushmore of Batman artists.

Why? Well, aside from the obvious, his covers starring the Caped Crusader just plain make me happy. No matter how dramatic the image is, there is something inherently cheerful about the vast majority of them and I could look at them forever.

Several years ago, I went out on a limb and ranked Infantino’s TOP 13 BATMAN COVERS. You can check it out here but for this year’s 13 COVERS salute, I chose to pick from the many covers that didn’t make that list. The groovy thing is that you can pretty much argue for any one of these to have been included.

Oh, and while you’re celebrating the birthday of one of the all-time greats, check out Paul Kupperberg’s column MY 13 FAVORITE COLLABORATIONS WITH CARMINE INFANTINO. It’s a real kick.

Right on.

  1. These are all great. I didn’t appreciate Infantio when I was a kid but this stuff is awesome. Really love the covers with the Batmobile coming at him and the scarecrow .

  2. Go Go Checks rule! So easily identifiable as the most enjoyable era of my childhood. At least Carmine knew that his work was appreciated in his lifetime…
