13 COVERS: A BOB OKSNER Birthday Celebration

The Bronze Age Supergirl artist was born 104 years ago…

The late Bob Oksner — born Oct. 14, 1916 — was probably best known for his tenure on DC’s many humor titles in the Silver Age. We’re talking The Adventures of Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope and whatnot.

But by the early ’70s, DC’s humor titles had faded and the artist segued to superhero titles — most notably (in my mind) Supergirl, both in her own title and in Adventure Comics.

When I imagine the Maid of Might in her most classic Bronze Age look — shorts, puffy sleeves, choker, small Super emblem on the upper chest — I think of Oksner.

So dig these 13 COVERS celebrating the artist and his four-color muse.

Groovy.

  1. I’ve always loved the cover to SUPERGIRL #6. “Supergirl’s stolen kisses…will cost lives!”, the Maid of Steel’s lifted leg as she gets kissed by the issue’s bad boy, and most of all the sign “Gang Lords’ Clubhouse” are hilarious. I’m sure most gangs of that era had such signs!

  2. Thanks so much for posting these… Supergirl was my first crush at age 7, and Mr. Oksner was the reason why. I Think his quote said it best: “My Women Had Saturday Night Bodies And Sunday School Faces”.

  3. In my opinion, his best work was on Superman and Action when he did a huge number of covers. Also, he was the best artist to ink the work of the legendary Curt Swan.
