13 COVERS: 50 Years of Marvel’s FOOM

The beloved house mag was launched 50 years ago this month…

One of the great marketing tools of the Bronze Age was the late, lamented FOOM — Marvel’s in-house prozine that was a guided tour of the House of Ideas. FOOM — for “Friends of Ol’ Marvel” — lasted for 22 issues and was so popular, the Distinguished Competition followed suit with its Amazing World of DC Comics, which was fab in its own right.

FOOM #1 was released 50 years ago this month. The date listed online is Feb. 1, 1973, but it was a mail-order mag so you got it when you got it.

Anyway, with the beloved pub celebrating its 50th anniversary, we gotta bring you 13 COVERS, right?

And here’s hoping that Marvel will deliver unto us a FOOM Omnibus — much like the forthcoming Marvel Age Omnibus.

Dig it.

  1. If anything ever needed an Omnibus, it’s FOOM – A Foomnibus! Common Marvel, make it mine!

  2. Mr. Steranko gave Hulk a nice coiff; he looks like a cover model!

    • I’m not sure. Further research makes it muddy but this could be John and/or Sal. (Ploog did the back cover, though, so perhaps that is Cockrum on the front.) Thanks for the eagle eyes!
