13 CLARK KENT COVERS Because It’s National Eyewear Day

The most famous spectacles in comics…

June 6 is National Eyewear Day pretty much because some company says it is. But I care not about the day’s provenance. I care only that it gives me an excuse to give you 13 CLARK KENT COVERS, from the Golden Age to the Modern Age.

See, because, Clark Kent’s glasses are almost as iconic as Superman’s cape. Well, not really, but you get my drift.

So here we go!

  1. Well, darn. I was hoping that Superman # 219 (August 1969) might be among the issues. I used to have it (one of those issues my mother made me get rid of as a kid, as I had too many “funny books.” I haven’t forgiven her).

But it had a wonderful Neal Adams Clark-Kent-centric cover (and story, as I recall: “Clark Kent, Hero and Superman Public Enemy!”)

  2. Even as a kid I thought glasses were a pretty flimsy disguise for a secret identity. It would have made as much sense as a non-glasses wearing Clark Kent to pop on a pair of glasses as Superman so people wouldn’t think “He looks just like that Daily Planet reporter!”

  3. I’ve heard about the Allen Funt issue, never read it! Too bad they didn’t think of having Clark as a panelist on “What’s My Line” where the surprise mystery guest would be Superman!
