A sisterly salute to Amazing Adventures’ sister title…
Last week, we had some fun with 13 COVERS spotlighting one of Marvel’s ’70s anthology books — Amazing Adventures. (Before that we did Marvel Fanfare. Click here.)
Anyway, since we did Amazing Adventures, it was just a matter of time before we brought you 13 COVERS saluting its sister mag, Astonishing Tales — a series (not to be confused with Tales to Astonish) that similarly began as a split title before switching to a run of solo acts.
We’re talking Deathlok, Ka-Zar and Doctor Doom, primarily, by the likes of Gil Kane, Rich Buckler, Marie Severin and MORE.

Buckler and his creation of Deathlok is not lauded enough. Met Buckler at a Dallas Con about 2000. I told him that Robocop and The Six Million Dollar Man owed him a creative debt. He waved that off. He was super cool, super humble. Wouldn’t let me pay him for his signature on Astonishing Tales 25 pictured above.
