These Comics Characters Are Just a Bunch of POTHEADS

SUNDAY FUNNIES WITH KERRY CALLEN!

By KERRY CALLEN

The person who requested the following commission had to dig pretty deep for characters. He also came up with their name, “The Potheads!” Since some are pretty obscure, I’ll name them, top to bottom: Fat Man, Red Tornado, Bizarro Dr. Fate, Forbush Man, and Johnny Appleseed.

I didn’t know Johnny Appleseed wore a pan on his head (or I had forgotten). Whenever I’m uncertain about something, I do what I always do… see what comic books have to say about the matter. Well, look at Classics Illustrated Junior #515, from 1955!

Going back further, Disney released a Johnny Appleseed cartoon in 1948. Here’s a Golden Book of it:

There’s quite a difference in Johnny’s age between the comic and the Golden Book. He must have scattered seeds during his entire lifetime!

  1. If I may add a Mexican character, look for “Capitan Cabeza”, a joke character created by Carlos Tron back in the late 1980s.

The guy is a janitor who is just doing his job when a very drunk cosmic entity decides to grant great power to a worthy mortal (Shazam style). But the cosmic guy is too drunk to actually search, and goes to the janitor. In the process, the guy gets his head stuck in the bucket he was using to mop, and the mop itself becomes a cosmic weapon.

While Chapman (his real last name) didn’t scatter seeds, instead establishing local nurseries, he did in fact do it for nearly his entire life (beginning in his 20s and dying around the age of 70). And he actually did wear the tin pot. So both are arguably accurate!

  4. Great work as always, and I know a bit about Johnny Appleseed, having played him in my school’s third grade play, pot and all. Can I join the team? 😉
