THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER: A MEMORIAL DAY Salute

13 COVERS…

This year’s 13 COVERS Memorial Day salute features DC’s Unknown Soldier, a stand-in for service members whose remains have not been identified.

Created by Joe Kubert, Robert Kanigher and Irv Novick, the Unknown Soldier made his first appearance in 1966’s Our Army at War #168, though the cover featured the star of the title, Sgt. Rock.

Four years later, he earned his own feature in Star Spangled War Stories, a title that eventually was renamed The Unknown Soldier. The series was cancelled in 1982, but the Soldier continues to surface from time to time, in various incarnations.

A safe Memorial Day to you.

  2. The great writer Peter David died yesterday, he wrote many Star Trek novels and had an historic run writing The Incredible Hulk comics in the 90s. He will be missed.

  3. I know the Unknown Soldier was deliberately left unnamed so he could serve as a representation of all of us. But I always thought it would be neat if he was the mysterious Kilroy, whose name American G.I.s claim to have seen in graffitti whenever they liberated a new place.
