The Magnificent Merchandising Art of DICK GIORDANO

One of the best ever was born 88 years ago…

Dick Giordano. One of the all-time greats. Simple as that.

The greatest inker who ever lived? I’d say so.

But beyond that was a life of mentoring, editing and gorgeous pencilling.

The late Giordano was born July 20, 1932 — 88 years ago — and typically we do a selection of 13 COVERS for a birthday salute. But occasionally we like to mix it up and this time around I was inspired by looking through TwoMorrows’ illustrated biography Dick Giordano: Changing Comics One Day at a Time, by Back Issue editor Michael Eury.

Below is a gallery of Giordano’s unfairly beautiful DC merchandising art, straight from the book itself. (The 2003, 176-pager is out of print but can still be obtained digitally from TwoMorrows for only $8.99. Click here to order. It’s an incredible bargain for an incredibly informative and colorful book.)

Meantime, dig these beautiful illustrations that only scratch the surface of what the biography has to offer:

A digital edition of Dick Giordano: Changing Comics One Day at a Time runs $8.99. Click here to order from TwoMorrows.

  1. Great spotlight on a great book! I always loved Giordano’s art. That Clark bar ad was a big standout to me. That was kind of the “ultimate” interpretation of the Super Friends to my young eye…and still is!!!

  2. He was always one of my favorite artists right up there with Jim Aparo and Neal Adams for Batman and others.

  3. Great stuff! Years ago, I actually found a copy of the Valentine Book and gave it to Dick. He wondered why he never got a copy at the time.
